How to Succeed in Business

Business Success Cycle

Introduce the Business Success Cycle Overview:

I’ve got a diagram on the board over here…

It always starts with goals…

Then you martial the resources you have readily available…

Then you have those resources interact with each other…

Then you have your results, or your success, or your feedback…whatever you want to call it

…and based on these results, you reevaluate your goals.

Now let’s review this Business Success Cycle in a little more detail

Goals —

Every successful endeavor begins with a goal.

A goal not written down is only a wish.

Understanding what you want from your business will help you identify the type of business you need to start…and when you factor in some of your resources like skills and talents, you will begin to hone your goals accordingly

Resources —

As you consider your business goals…

You begin to identify and inventory those things that you have like — information, people, capital, equipment, training, etc.

Then you identify and catalog the things you need, but don’t have. This process may result in more “sub”-goals —

Interactions —

Once you have inventoried all your resources, you are ready to go out and meet with people, and

Either gather the additional things you need,

Or begin attracting customers

Be aware! This is where you need to be able to “sell” your concept, product or service to others.

This is where people are going to ask you some very challenging questions and introduce elements of doubt…

You need to be prepared by anticipating these questions, develop skills to think on your feet regarding those issues you will not have thought of, and be open to the new information you will learn from others.

Success —

Success is measured by your ability to reach your goals.

Let’s also look at success another way — If you objectively review the results or feedback you receive, even if you do not “reach your goal”…

You are now in a situation where you can identify new goals, modify the ones you made, or scrap the idea and start over…it doesn’t really matter —

You set new goals and start the cycle all over

The exciting news is that as you continue from one cycle to the next — always improving — you are being successful, for that is the very definition of success — the methodical progression toward a worthy goal.

Success is not just the arrival at your goal — it is the process you take to arrive at your goals that define your success

Please indulge with me in finishing this video on an inspirational note because not everyone will reach their goals on the first trip around this success cycle. So here is a thought by Robert W. Service that I hope will carry you through the tough times you, no doubt will face if you havn’t begun already — It’s called “Carry On”

It’s easy to fight when everything’s right,
And you’re mad with the thrill and the glory;
It’s easy to cheer when victory’s near,
And wallow in fields that are gory.
It’s a different song when everything’s wrong,
When you’re feeling infernally mortal;
When it’s ten against one, and hope there is none,
Buck up, little soldier, and chortle:

Carry on! Carry on!
There isn’t much punch in your blow.
You’re glaring and staring and hitting out blind;
You’re muddy and bloody, but never you mind.
Carry on! Carry on!
You haven’t the ghost of a show.
It’s looking like death, but while you’ve a breath,
Carry on, my son! Carry on!

And so in the strife of the battle of life
It’s easy to fight when you’re winning;
It’s easy to slave, and starve and be brave,
When the dawn of success is beginning.
But the man who can meet despair and defeat
With a cheer, there’s the man of God’s choosing;
The man who can fight to Heaven’s own height
Is the man who can fight when he’s losing.

Carry on! Carry on!
Things never were looming so black.
But show that you haven’t a cowardly streak,
And though you’re unlucky you never are weak.
Carry on! Carry on!
Brace up for another attack.
It’s looking like hell, but — you never can tell:
Carry on, old man! Carry on!

There are some who drift out in the deserts of doubt,
And some who in brutishness wallow;
There are others, I know, who in piety go
Because of a Heaven to follow.
But to labour with zest, and to give of your best,
For the sweetness and joy of the giving;
To help folks along with a hand and a song;
Why, there’s the real sunshine of living.

Carry on! Carry on!
Fight the good fight and true;
Believe in your mission, greet life with a cheer;
There’s big work to do, and that’s why you are here.
Carry on! Carry on!
Let the world be the better for you;
And at last when you die, let this be your cry:
Carry on, my soul! Carry on!
